Welcome to Type 1 Designs!
My wife Lauren and I are born and raised Idahoans. Some of my earliest memories are of elk camp with my dad and uncle, following them around the hills well before I was old enough to have a tag in my pocket, just stepping on balsam root and probably complaining about being cold. Lauren grew up on her family farm and enjoyed being outdoors in that fashion. I have been lucky enough to share my love of big game hunting with her. Now I have someone following me around the hills, making noise and complaining about being cold... Just kidding! Before I took Lauren out looking for a deer for the very first time, we spent a lot of time shooting paper and steel. That was years ago, and we still enjoy doing this together regularly.
It was from this hobby of shooting rifles at long range in preparation for fall that this company was born. After struggling to get a Tikka 25-06 to shoot well enough with factory loads for Lauren to be confident taking a deer at mid-range, I discovered that it was extremely sensitive from lot-to-lot with the same factory load. After learning this, I noticed that there was a visible discrepancy in the seating depth of the two different lots of cartridges. I ended up using an old bullet puller and my reloading press with a standard seating die to partially pull the bullets from the "bad" lot and re-seat them to length of the "good" lot. Low and behold, the rifle began shooting great with the re-seated "bad" lot of cartridges. I began testing different rifles to confirm that simply adjusting the seating depth of factory loads made a significant difference in the dispersion of a rifle with a particular factory load. I was excited when the data I gathered proved that it certainly does.
I went to work designing a tool that could accomplish that same task quickly and accurately that everyone can afford and use on their own. Improving my prototypes and setting up this business took me well over a year with a lot of ups and downs, but Lauren was always there to lend a helping hand and support the process, no matter how much I was spending on factory loads... This wouldn't have been possible without her constant reassurance and unwavering confidence that investing all of the time and money was the right decision. Thankfully, this has led to the release of our first product: The Type 1 Designs Seating Depth Tool.
Thank you all very much for supporting our business!
